Discover Crete
#ffffff;" /> Many people take a holiday on the Greek island of Crete and enjoy the fantastic beaches, charming villages and endless sunshine. But Crete offers the visitor much more than this. Its fascinating archaeological ruins and world-class museums are surely a bonus. And in the far northwest, east and south of the island, away from the tourist trail, you can expect to see some really excellent smaller Minoan sites that are hardly visited. But before heading for the archaeological...
Crete's Beaches - Greece
The coastline of Crete has 155 kilometres of beautiful sandy beaches. Chania prefecture has two dramatic beaches, Falasarna and Elafonissi, not forgetting Almyrida with its safe blue flag beaches. There is a stunning long stretch of beach on the north coast of the island at Georgioupolis, and Europe's only natural palm grove at Vai beach on the north east point of the island. South of Heraklion is Matala beach; the caves at the side have been inhabited since prehistoric times, most recently in the 1970's by hippies. Recommended beaches to visit in Crete are Kato Zakros, Malia, Paleochora, Prevelli, Frangokastello, Istro, Agia Pelagia, Menies, Xerokampos and Makrigalos. Crete is the largest Greek...

Why "Off Plan" is Now Such a Big Turn...
You can now have 130,000 very good reasons not to buy property 'off plan' as an investment, or to put it another way, EUR130,000. That's how much one couple have estimated they saved from cutting out the developers - and their hefty profit mark up - by purchasing a plot of land themselves and having a villa built to their exact specifications. This gave them the opportunity to acquire a property with a value well beyond their available investment budget, and the potential for a much higher return when selling the property on to investors seeking a more tangible asset than stocks and shares. This has given those investors an attractive choice of options. Buy land with a view to long term capital gain...
Poseidon is one of the original Olympian gods out of the six. He is the god of the sea. He is also the god of earthquakes and horses. His parents were Cronus and Rhea; and his siblings were Zeus, Demeter, Hades, Hestia and Hera. Even Homer has referred to Poseidon in his famous epics, Iliad and Odyssey. He was known to shake the world and the seas with his anger and power. Poseidon traveled the waves in the seas using a chariot drawn by dolphins. Although he was the master of the seas, he was responsible to the king of the gods, Zeus. In Greek mythology, there are many myths related to Poseidon. Cronus attained the throne by dethroning his father and became the king of the gods. However, it was...
p>The 'trois Gnossiennes' (1890) is a set of dance-like pieces of similar character, like the earlier composed 'trois Sarabandes' (1887) and 'trois Gymnopédies' (1888). The 'trois Gnossiennes' were first published by Satie as a set through Rouart, Lerolle & Cie. in 1913. The Gnossiennes continue in the minimalist style of the Gymnopédies but add ornaments that give the pieces a destinctly oriental feel. Although the pieces are obviously composed in a 4/4 time signature, Satie did not indicate it in the score. He also omitted barlines, leaving one big "bar" for the entire piece. This gives the impression of great freedom for the pianist. The comments written above the score, like...
Copper Pipes and Connectors
Plumbing refers to a system of pipes that allows water into and out of a building or a structure. The term itself comes from a Latin term, plumbum, which is commonly known as lead. Here is a piece of history on plumbing. The first plumbing systems were installed to get rid of human wastes. In the Indus Valley, which is found in western India and Pakistan, most shelters had assembled drainage for waste disposal by the year 2500 BC. Moreover, a palace on the island of Crete had pipes to supply the dwellers with drinking water by about 2000 BC. The ancient Romans used lead metal for their pipes. In addition, their old systems still have installed iron pipes and older houses have lead pipes for their...

Olive is a common name of a Mediterranean evergreen tree having fragrant white flowers, usually lance-shaped leathery leaves, and edible drupes. The Botanical name of olive is Oleaceae. Olives are classified in the Division Magnoliophyta - Class Magnoliopsida - Order Scrophulariales - Family Oleaceae. Oleaceae is a family of trees that grow in warm temperate climates and of the Old World tropics, especially Asia and the East Indies. Olives or Olive trees were believed to be grown on the island of Crete in 3500 BC. Semitic peoples were growing olives as early as 3000 BC. It should be no surprise that roses grow wild all around the world. There is a difference between home garden grown roses and roses that grow in the wild. Home grown gardens tend to be healthy looking and very well tamed. This is due to the fact that these roses are always well taken care of. They are frequently watered, fertilized and have been planned out when grown. Wild roses on the other hand have a beauty all their own. These flowers can grow in the middle of nowhere and with little care, they can flourish beautifully as well. Therefore, for roses who have not been well taken care of, those that grow wild, they are certainly an awe inspiring moment for all gardeners and flower lovers. Bringing...
A Drop of Olive Oil
One of the most well-known vegetable oils, olive oil, which is obtained from the fruit of the Olive tree that is traditionally found in the Mediterranean Basin, has been used since ancient years in cooking, cosmetics, soaps, or even as a fuel of traditional oil lamps. Described as the "Mediterranean Miracle," olive oil has been regarded one of the most healthful dietary oils due to its high content of monounsaturated fat-mainly Oleic acid-and polyphenols. According to numerous studies, olive oil has tremendous positive health outcomes when daily included as part of a diet plan. In fact, the life expectancy rates of the countries around the Mediterranean Sea have been found to be greater in...
Honoring the Divine Feminine in Marriage and...
What might it have been like to live in a society where the Divine Feminine as Mother was revered? In our present cultural context the importance of motherhood is paid lip service more than it is genuinely revered. We can imagine what such a world might look like though, by reviewing what we know about Minoan civilization, dating from about 3,000 to 1400 B.C. The Minoans lived on the island of Crete in the Mediterranean Sea. Abundant archaeological evidence exists for this society's reverence of a Goddess. Murals found at Knossos, a town in Crete, show plant life in exuberant growth around the central image of a female deity. Animals and humans are depicted as part of this abundance. These paintings...

Paleochora - Crete's Best Kept Secret
Paleochora, 'The Bride of The Libyan Sea', as it has been called, is a small, typically Greek town (or perhaps large village) sitting on the south-west coast of the island of Crete. Well, 'sitting' on the coast is a little deceptive. The town is built on a small peninsular which juts out into the sea and is a perfect holiday destination for many people 'in the know'. About 80% of tourists who visit the town return again and again. Many of them will not recommend Paleochora to anyone but trusted friends as they want to keep it from becoming too popular and developed! Getting around in Paleochora is easy. It takes just about 5 minutes to walk from the west cost to the east coast and all of the town...
Clawfoot Tub Cleaning Information & Fun Facts
How do I clean my clawfoot tub? Never use abrasive cleaners that will scratch the tub surface. Never use chlorine bleach, C.L.R., or other cleaners containing acid. These chemicals can leave a permanent discoloration. Always use mild detergents (e.g., Soft Scrub, 409, Dow Bath & Tile Cleaner) for normal cleaning. For tougher stains, we recommend Zud or Barkeepers Friend. Both of these products can be found at most grocery and hardware stores. Do not allow the cleaning material to soak on the tub surface. Rinse and immediately wipe with a soft damp sponge or cloth. Always test the cleaning material in an inconspicuous area before applying to the entire surface. Most importantly, follow the...
I have often observed in the writings of many of my Christian friends raising an important issue on dying for faith saying, "because of faithful men like Peter and Paul, as well as the other disciples, Christianity flourished". Here is the story of Paul from the Bible. Please read on keeping the question in the title in mind, because I feel that faith and death do not gel well. When Saul of Taurus, later named Paul, appeared in Jerusalem to report to James and the elders regarding his recent missionary journey to Cyprus and Syria he found the rumor widespread that he was teaching Jews living in Gentile countries to forsake the laws of Moses. Despite all that he could do to show his loyalty to this...
Celebrating the Divine Feminine
In the ancient world the Divine Feminine, or Goddess, was often portrayed in three aspects: maiden, mother, and old woman. We live in a very different world today, but it is worth looking at these three aspects because they are still important stages in a woman's life -- even though they don't encompass all that a modern woman is. Moving from one stage to another marks a significant and irreversible natural shift in our bodies and our female being. Now you might be thinking, This all sounds like the old maxim, "Biology is destiny," and who wants to be defined by that anymore? Well, yes, it does sound that way - unless you also consider these three stages as spiritual shifts in our lives. What might...
Taurus actually refers to a star constellation that has been identified as having the appearance of a bull, by a variety of civilizations at different times in history. This has led to the rise of a wide assortment of bull myths and religious tales in different areas throughout the world. The actual myth associated with Taurus is tied into a series of stories that originated in and around the region of the Greek peninsula. The specific name Taurus is a reference to a snow white bull form that was taken on by Zeus. Zeus had fallen in love, or lust, with Europa, a famously beautiful princess of Phoenicia. When he approached her however, with his amorous intentions, he was rejected by the princess and...
Volcanoes in Action
Violent and devastating, legendary in history and mythology, volcanoes in action are among the most powerful forces of nature. They have shaped the Earth for billions of years and continue to do so, sometimes with deadly consequences to life and property. Awesome to witness, erupting volcanoes are natural geologic structures providing a conduit to the Earth's surface for the extrusion of molten rock materials migrating upwards from the depths beneath the Earth's crust. Volcanoes can occur on land or on the seabed beneath the oceans. Molten rock, or magma, to use its proper geological name for a body of molten rock found at depth, exists under pressure deep within the Earth. When overlaying solid...
Celtic legend claims the spirits of children who died in childbirth scattered daisies on the earth to cheer their sorrowing parents. Stunning gold hairpins, each ending in a daisy-like ornament were found when the Minoan palace on the Island of Crete was excavated. They are believed to be more than 4000 years old. Egyptian ceramics are also decorated with daisies. This daisies' English name was day's eye, referring to the way this flower opens and closes with the sun. And primitive medical men drew the obvious conclusion that it was plainly intended to cure eye troubles. Assyrians crushed daisies and mixed them with oil to turn gray hair dark again. Marguerite, the French word for daisy, is derived...
The sport of rodeo actually started as a most important aspect of cattle ranching, especially in areas like the US Southwest, of Spanish influence. It was, in fact, so important that it was regulated legally in the state of California. In the west, before fencing was established and widely accepted, cattle herds would often become mixed. Rodeos were held, at least annually, in order to separate the cattle, normally somewhere between the first of April and the last day of July. Cattle and calf roping and branding were the first rodeo sports that arose out of a practical application. When roping and corralling a cow, her calf would come close, enabling ranch hands to identify which calves were with...
Plakias hotels have increased dramatically in and around the charismatic little village of Plakias, gently nestled along the southern coast of the island of Crete. Considered Greece's largest and most popular tourist island, the area has retained the island's original character of peacefulness, serenity, and tranquility. The beautiful Cretan swallows of Plakias add to the atmosphere by choosing to stay in this exotic wonderland all year long, with hotel pre-bookings necessary in the high seasons of July and August. Historically, Crete was the center of the ancient Minoan civilization, with Plakias on the Minoan ruins of Lamon ("Plakias Agiou Vasileiou") and nearby Knossos was the site of one of the...

Our hotel, Ariadne, was situated just outside of Retymnon in an area called Palatanes. Truly a wonderful place to be if it wasn't for the fact that we had arrived during one of the two rainiest weeks in October. We had planned a bus journey to a nearby convent which was cancelled due to bad weather. But man and wife alone in Crete can still be great fun. We played quite a bit of cards, and the Greek cognac - Metaxa - and Ouzo was nice whereas my wife mostly enjoyed Pisang Ambon with banana juice. But our walks were lovely. We saw quite a few local tavernas and had the exquisite joy of having our favorite lunch - tuna salad with lots of fresh vegetables. Already on the second day they remembered that...

Ten years ago people from abroad looking for property in Crete were not that many. However, real estate develops and today it is quite a popular destination. Among the reasons attracting villa and property seekers in a place, is its unique character and natural landscape. Therefore, a question is generated: what happens today, when most areas have more and more houses built not for locals but other nationalities too? In an article published in the local Cretan newspaper "Haniotika Nea" on the 19th of April, 2008, the testimony of Tony and Mary Shuttleworth is featured, a couple from Wales in Britain. Tony and Mary bought a property in the area of Apokoronas and moved into their property on January...

Crete is the largest of the Greek islands. Situated between Europe and Africa. It has varied landscapes, mountains, deep gorges, fertile valleys with small villages surrounded by olive trees and rich farmland as well as the miles of sandy beaches. Crete, the Great Island
Crete, in the southeast Mediterranean, is the largest Greek island, measuring 250 kilometres east to west and 60 kilometers at its widest point north to south. Crete is the birthplace of Zeus, Father of the Gods of Olympus. It is also the cradle of Minoan civilization, which dominated the Mediterranean from 2800 BC to 1400 BC and has left marvellous monuments such as the Palace of Knossos, as well as exquisite vases, frescos and jewellery now housed in the museums of Crete. Crete is also the birthplace of the famous artist Domenikos Theotokopoulos or El Greco; the poet Vicenzos Kornaros, author of "Erotokritos"; the author Nikos Kazantzakis, best known for "Zorba the Greek" and "The Last Temptation...
Greek Property May Well Prove a Calm Investment...
Ten years ago, Greece property was largely overlooked. Buyers were either repeatedly drawn to old favourites such as Spain and France, or looking further afield to the emerging markets of Morocco or Bulgaria. But interest in property in Greece remains alight for a number of reasons: the healthy lifestyle, sunny climate, great beaches and food, and a superb quality of life for a fraction of the cost, to name but a few. An established democracy, Greece is a fully-fledged member of the EU, which means that for Europeans the purchasing process can be simple. It also gives Spain a run for its money on the British package-holidaymaker front, which is good news for anyone planning to rent out their...

It is not only delicious food, but it seems to protect against heart disease, and a lot of chronic conditions. The diet of the Mediterranean Sea is not the traditional system of food only of its kind useful for health. However, it was subjected to study for a longer period than any other; it is also practical for the majority of Americans. It corresponds well with the latest on nutrition perceptions...

Ancient Olympia Greece - Pelops and Hippodamia
The first evidence relevant to the worship of Pelops and Hippodamia, in the area of Olympia, appeared during the Mycenaean period. The mythological tradition of the area is connected to the ancient king of Pisa, Oenomaus, son of the god Ares. Oenomaus had received a prophecy that the end of his life would come with the marriage of his daughter Hippodamia, whom he begot with his wife Sterope. In an attempt to avoid the prophecy, the king announced that he would give his daughter to the one who would beat him in a chariot race. He, however, used unbeatable weapons and immortal horses, gifts from his father. During the races, many brave young men were killed. Oenomaus buried their bodies close to the...
